Wireless network meet satellite TV service. At&t announced Sunday that they will buy Direct TV for $48.5 billion. Direct TV was looking for a partner to assist in it’s lack of phone and internet service. The acquisition will give AT&T about 26 million additional subscribers and DirecTV’s subscriber base has slowed and this would help them make up for their lack of competitive internet broadband service.
“The move comes as companies in the telecom and cable industries embark on a new round of consolidation as video, voice and data services all converge around the Internet. An acquisition of DirecTV could give the telecom giant more clout with content companies to negotiate deals to distribute movies and television shows over the Internet and wireless devices. It could also free up space on its wired network to offer faster broadband speeds and more video-on-demand services by shifting the bandwidth-heavy live television transmission to the satellite.” (Wall Street Journal)
